Compare Two Mini Fridges Find potential savings
Fridge A uses your current estimate (Annual kWh Rating). Fridge B uses an annual energy label. Both share your electricity rate, operating days, and quantity.
Fridge A and B use different measurement methods. A standardized label and a measured or wattage estimate may not be directly comparable. Match methods and conditions where possible.

Where do I find annual kWh?
Annual kWh is the estimated electricity used over a year under energy-rating conditions. Check your exact model's energy label, manufacturer specifications, or published efficiency information. Relevant US products may have EnergyGuide or ENERGY STAR information; other countries use different labeling systems.
Why isn't running wattage the daily average?
Watts measure the rate of power use; kWh measure energy used over time. Many fridges cycle their compressor to maintain temperature, so compressor running watts are not the same as average 24-hour power. Start-up peaks should not be used as average wattage.
What changes real-world consumption?
Room temperature, thermostat settings, door openings, design, freezer compartments, defrost cycles, door seals, age, condition, airflow, and actual runtime all matter. This tool does not apply unverified automatic corrections for these factors.
Can I unplug it to reduce costs?
For seasonal or dorm use, reduce operating days only when the appliance is emptied, cleaned, and safely taken out of service. Do not turn a fridge off for extended periods while it contains perishable food. Follow the manufacturer's operating and ventilation guidance.
How Much Does a Mini Fridge Cost to Run?
A mini fridge can cost just a few dollars per month in electricity, although the actual expense depends on the model, its energy consumption, and your local electricity rate.
For example, a mini fridge consuming 220 kWh per year at an electricity rate of $0.18 per kWh would cost approximately:
- Daily: $0.11
- Monthly: $3.30
- Yearly: $39.60
These are illustrative estimates, not universal averages. A compact refrigerator with a higher annual kWh rating will generally cost more to operate at the same electricity rate.
The Mini Fridge Electricity Cost Calculator above lets you estimate running costs using your appliance’s annual energy rating, measured electricity consumption, or wattage and compressor runtime. You can also adjust the operating schedule, electricity rate, and number of refrigerators.
Mini Fridge Electricity Consumption: Daily, Monthly, and Yearly
Mini refrigerators vary in energy efficiency, capacity, cooling technology, and design. Instead of assuming every compact refrigerator consumes the same amount of electricity, compare models using their published annual kWh ratings.
Here are three example consumption levels and their estimated costs at $0.18 per kWh.
Mini Fridge Using 150 kWh Per Year
- Daily consumption: 0.41 kWh
- Average monthly consumption: 12.5 kWh
- Annual consumption: 150 kWh
- Monthly electricity cost: $2.25
- Annual electricity cost: $27.00
Mini Fridge Using 220 kWh Per Year
- Daily consumption: 0.60 kWh
- Average monthly consumption: 18.33 kWh
- Annual consumption: 220 kWh
- Monthly electricity cost: $3.30
- Annual electricity cost: $39.60
Mini Fridge Using 300 kWh Per Year
- Daily consumption: 0.82 kWh
- Average monthly consumption: 25 kWh
- Annual consumption: 300 kWh
- Monthly electricity cost: $4.50
- Annual electricity cost: $54.00
These figures assume the refrigerator operates throughout the year. Monthly figures represent annual consumption divided by 12, rather than the consumption of an exact 30-day period.
The examples demonstrate how different annual energy ratings affect running expenses. They do not represent guaranteed consumption levels for specific fridge sizes.
How to Calculate Your Mini Fridge’s Electricity Cost
The calculator provides three methods depending on the information available.
1. Annual kWh Rating
Enter the yearly energy consumption listed for your specific refrigerator model. The calculator uses this figure to estimate daily, monthly, and annual running costs.
2. Power Meter Reading
If you have measured the appliance’s electricity consumption using a compatible energy meter, enter the measured kWh and measurement duration. The calculator projects consumption over your selected operating schedule.
3. Wattage Estimate
If you only know the appliance’s power consumption in watts, select the appropriate refrigerator type and enter the relevant operating assumptions. For compressor models, estimated compressor runtime helps account for periods when the cooling system is not running.
Whichever method you choose, enter your electricity rate in the selected currency. The calculator will display estimated consumption and electricity expenses for your chosen operating schedule.
Mini Fridge Electricity Costs for Dorm Rooms, Bedrooms, and Offices
Where you use your refrigerator can influence how you calculate its annual operating expenses, particularly when the appliance is used for only part of the year.
Dorm Room Mini Fridge
Students may use compact refrigerators during the academic year rather than throughout the entire calendar year.
Suppose a dorm room mini fridge has an annual energy rating of 220 kWh, but operates for only 270 days.
At $0.18 per kWh:
- Estimated electricity consumption: 162.74 kWh
- Estimated annual electricity cost: $29.29
This assumes the refrigerator is safely taken out of service for the remaining days. A fridge that stays powered during holidays or weekends should include those days in its operating schedule.
Bedroom Mini Fridge
A bedroom mini fridge used for drinks or refrigerated food may remain powered throughout the year.
For example, a model consuming 180 kWh annually would cost approximately $32.40 per year, or $2.70 per average month, at $0.18 per kWh.
When selecting a bedroom refrigerator, consider electricity consumption alongside noise levels, dimensions, storage capacity, and cooling performance.
Office Mini Fridge
Office refrigerators may remain connected overnight and during weekends even when employees are absent.
For example, two identical mini fridges consuming 220 kWh annually each would use a combined 440 kWh per year.
At $0.18 per kWh, their combined annual electricity cost would be $79.20.
Use the calculator’s quantity field to estimate the combined cost of operating multiple identical refrigerators.
Mini Fridge vs Regular Refrigerator: Which Is Cheaper to Run?
A mini fridge may consume less total electricity than a full-size refrigerator because it has a smaller storage compartment. However, a smaller appliance is not automatically more energy-efficient relative to its usable capacity.
Consider two hypothetical refrigerators:
- Mini fridge: 220 kWh annually
- Full-size refrigerator: 400 kWh annually
At $0.18 per kWh, the mini fridge would cost $39.60 annually, compared with $72 for the full-size model.
The mini fridge would therefore use $32.40 less electricity per year under these assumptions.
However, the full-size refrigerator may provide substantially more usable storage space. For households storing groceries for several people, its additional capacity may justify the higher electricity consumption.
The better choice depends on storage requirements, appliance efficiency, and intended use rather than electricity costs alone.
For a broader comparison of refrigerator types, power consumption, and energy ratings, read our guide on how much electricity a refrigerator uses.
Do Mini Fridges With Freezers Cost More to Operate?
Some compact refrigerators include a small freezer compartment, while others provide only refrigerated storage.
A freezer compartment operates at a lower temperature than the fresh-food section, but this does not mean every mini fridge with a freezer uses more electricity than every freezerless model.
Annual consumption depends on the appliance’s insulation, cooling system, capacity, and overall design.
For example, two similarly sized mini fridges may have different annual kWh ratings despite both offering freezer compartments.
If you are choosing between models with and without freezers, compare their actual energy ratings rather than assuming one configuration will always be cheaper.
A freezerless refrigerator may be more practical if you only need to store beverages and refrigerated food. A model with a freezer may offer additional convenience, but compare its operating cost and usable storage before purchasing.
How Much Can an Energy-Efficient Mini Fridge Save?
An energy-efficient mini fridge can reduce long-term electricity expenses, although its financial value depends on both energy savings and purchase price.
Consider two hypothetical models:
Mini Fridge A
- Annual consumption: 300 kWh
- Electricity rate: $0.20/kWh
- Annual electricity cost: $60
Mini Fridge B
- Annual consumption: 180 kWh
- Electricity rate: $0.20/kWh
- Annual electricity cost: $36
Mini Fridge B would save approximately 120 kWh and $24 per year.
If electricity rates and consumption remained unchanged:
- Three-year savings: $72
- Five-year savings: $120
- Ten-year savings: $240
Now suppose Mini Fridge B costs $120 more to purchase. At $24 in annual electricity savings, recovering the additional upfront cost would take approximately five years.
This is a simple payback estimate that excludes maintenance, repairs, changing electricity rates, and differences in appliance lifespan.
Use the calculator’s Compare Two Mini Fridges feature to estimate electricity savings and compare the potential long-term cost of different models.
How to Choose a Mini Fridge With Lower Running Costs
When buying a compact refrigerator, comparing purchase prices alone may overlook differences in ongoing electricity expenses.
Before making a decision, consider:
- Annual kWh rating: Compare published annual electricity consumption for the specific models.
- Usable capacity: Select enough storage for your needs without assuming the smallest model is automatically the most efficient.
- Freezer requirements: Decide whether you need a freezer compartment or only refrigerated storage.
- Total ownership cost: Consider the purchase price alongside estimated electricity expenses over several years.
- Intended environment: Choose a refrigerator suitable for the temperature conditions and location where it will operate.
A model with a higher purchase price may offer lower long-term electricity costs, but that advantage should be calculated rather than assumed.
